Recover aircraft and automotive waste to manufacture new products for strategic sectors | from InnovaSpain
The European COMPASS project, aims to recover high-value waste from the aerospace and automotive industries, such as sheet metal and thermoplastic composite panels, and re-manufacture them into new, strategic products.
Central to this initiative is AITIIP Technology Centre, which leads the development of advanced processes for remanufacturing thermoplastic composites using innovations in pressing, heating, and tooling.
COMPASS brings together a consortium of 13 international partners to design next-generation dismantling and recovery technologies, and to implement a digital product passport that will trace the life cycle of each component. By extending the useful life of parts, the project is expected to cut waste by up to 30% in production and end-of-life phases, significantly reducing the demand for virgin materials and environmental impact.
Through COMPASS, AITIIP and its partners are paving the way for a more sustainable, circular economy in high-tech manufacturing, turning what is typically considered “waste” into valuable, reusable materials for aerospace and automotive applications.
